Canada tourist visa types
Canada visitor visa
A visitor visa is valid for most travel purposes up to six months, including:
- Tourism
- Family visits
- Business meetings, conferences, etc.
- Study
- Work.
The key point here is that if you’re applying for tourist purposes, business visits, or visiting family and relatives, the process is straightforward: you simply need to apply for a visitor visa, which we will explain below.
However, if you are applying to study or work in Canada, your application process begins with applying for a study or work permit. You will need to be enrolled at a Canadian educational institution or hold a valid work offer from a Canadian employer to apply for those.
Your Canadian study or work visa application is practically a part of the permit application process. If your study or work program lasts more than six months, you will need to renew your visa in Canada.
Canada transit visa
If you are travelling somewhere else but have a transit in Canada that lasts for 48 hours or less, you will need to hold a valid Canada transit visa.
If your transit lasts longer than 48 hours, or if you want to get out of the airport during transit to sightsee, for example, you will need a visitor visa.
There is no fee charged for Canada transit visa applications.

- High Commission of Canada in New Delhi
- Consulate General of Canada in Bengaluru
- Consulate General of Canada in Chandigarh
Canada VACs in India are operated by VFS Global and are available in other cities besides ones that also have visa offices: Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Pune. The procedure to apply for a visa in such centers may slightly differ from visa offices.
Canada visa cost
Canada visa fee for Indians (as well as for applicants from other countries) is $CAN 100 for a single person to apply for a visitor visa. If you need your biometrics taken, the fee for the service is $CAN 85.
A student permit application costs $CAN 150, while a work permit costs $ 155. The biometrics fee costs the same for both of these permits.
You may pay online on the IRCC official website (after you have created an account) or at your local visa application center.
