Below, we explain how to create a compliant 3×3 cm photo at home for passports, visas, and other documents — quickly and without visiting a studio.
The 30 mm high x 30 mm wide photo size is the standard ID photo format, applicable in the following cases:
Bolivia
Planning a trip to Bolivia? For your visa application, you will need to submit a 30x30 mm photograph along with other required documents.
The same 30x30 mm photo size is used for Bolivia’s national ID card (Cedula de Identidad).
Panama
In Panama, 3x3 cm photos are used to apply for the seaman's passbook.
3x3 cm photo in inches
A 30×30 mm photo equals approximately 1.18 × 1.18 inches. In other words, the picture must be exactly 1.18 inches wide and 1.18 inches high. This conversion is useful when printing in countries that use inches or when uploading a photo to digital forms that specify size in the imperial system.
An example of a 3 x 3 photo is shown below:
3×3 photo in pixels
Do you need a digital 3×3 cm photo for an online submission? The required pixel size depends on the resolution (DPI) requested by the issuing authority.
For example:
- At 300 DPI → 354 × 354 pixels
- At 600 DPI → 709 × 709 pixels (optimal quality)
Higher DPI results in better clarity, which is especially important for biometric documents such as passports and visas.
