Taiwan passport photo size in cm
The required photo size for a Taiwan passport is 3.5 cm wide x 4.5 cm high, or 35 x 45 mm, without a border. Use a color photograph taken within the last six months, with a white background. These are the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) passport photo specifications.
Apart from the overall size of the photo, check the portrait's proportions:
- The distance from the chin to the crown must be 32-36 mm.
- Center the face, include the top of the shoulders and leave space above the head. The head or hair must not touch the top edge.
Here is an example:
Appearance and photo quality
Look straight at the camera with your head upright, both eyes open and your mouth closed without showing teeth. Keep your eyebrows, eyes, facial outline and ear contours visible. Hair must not cover these features. Lighting should be even, without distracting shadows, glare or red-eye, and the image must show your natural appearance.
Clear glasses are allowed if the lenses have no reflections and the frames do not cover any part of the eyes. Avoid thick frames. Tinted glasses are not normally allowed, with an exception for visually impaired applicants; colored contact lenses and lenses that enlarge the pupils should not be used. Religious head coverings may be worn with the face visible from chin to forehead and along both sides. BOCA also allows an exception where a physiological condition prevents the mouth from closing.
Babies and young children
Only the child may appear in the final photo. Keep supporting hands, other people, toys, pacifiers and chair backs out of the frame. Do not assume there is a general exemption allowing babies to close their eyes. Home-photography tips appear in our guide to taking a baby's passport photo without the stress.
Digital photo requirements
For BOCA's domestic passport systems, the digital portrait must meet the following technical requirements as well as the appearance rules:
- File format: JPG or JPEG
- Color mode: RGB, at least 24-bit
- Maximum file size: 5 MB
- Minimum pixel dimensions: 413 pixels wide x 531 pixels high
The pixel dimensions are minimums, not a requirement to export every file at exactly that size. A compulsory 600 dpi setting is not part of these upload specifications. DPI describes a print-resolution setting; it is not a substitute for checking the actual pixels and file size.
How many printed photos do you need?
The ordinary passport-photo requirement is two identical prints. Domestic applicants who upload a digital portrait may qualify for different paper-photo arrangements:
- For an individual application using BOCA's form-and-appointment system, attach one matching color print if the short application sheet is printed in black and white. BOCA's newer Chinese instructions make this condition explicit; its English page describes the matching-print requirement more broadly.
- For an application submitted through a travel agency without a digital portrait file, the instructions specify one paper photo.
- If the submitted image is unsuitable or cannot be reproduced to the required quality, BOCA may require two replacement prints.
An upload therefore does not always remove the need for printed photos. Follow the instructions for your application route. Overseas applicants should use their mission's submission instructions rather than assume the domestic upload procedure applies.
Taiwan passport photo size in inches
The required Taiwan passport photo size in inches is approximately 1.38 x 1.77, with the width stated first.
Taiwan passport photo size in cun
You may see the Taiwan passport portrait described locally as a "2-inch photo" or 2 吋. BOCA's cropping tool uses this label for a photograph measuring 35 x 45 mm. It does not mean that the standard domestic passport photo is a square U.S. 2 x 2-inch photograph. Order by the exact millimeter dimensions rather than the informal size name.
Taiwan visa photo size
BOCA's current tourist-visa instructions specify two color photos, 35 mm wide x 45 mm high, taken within six months against a white background. Although those dimensions match the standard passport photo, do not assume every visa route has the same upload requirements as a passport application.
Taiwan national-ID photos have the same physical dimensions but a different recency rule under the Ministry of the Interior's national-ID specifications:
| Document | Photo dimensions | Recency |
|---|---|---|
| Taiwan passport, standard BOCA format | 35 x 45 mm | Within six months |
| Taiwan tourist visa, current BOCA instructions | 35 x 45 mm | Within six months |
| Taiwan national ID card | 35 x 45 mm | Within two years |
For a visa or ID application, select that document type and check its own submission instructions. Matching print dimensions do not make every application requirement interchangeable.

Visafoto crops your image to the Taiwan passport photo dimensions and adjusts the position of the head and eyes. It also replaces the background with plain white and enhances the overall image quality, so you can prepare the photo at home instead of arranging a separate visit to a photographer.
First, ask someone to take a clear photo with your phone or camera. Keep the lens at eye level, leave room around your head and shoulders, and avoid a close-up wide-angle selfie. Check that the saved image is not mirrored. Your starting background does not have to be white or perfectly arranged: Visafoto can replace it and improve lighting, contrast and resolution.
Select Taiwan and the passport document type, upload the source image and review the prepared result. Visafoto adjusts the crop and background and can correct uneven brightness, including local lighting differences, while preserving your facial features and identifying details. These are Visafoto's preparation features; the submitted portrait must still accurately represent you.
You will receive an individual digital portrait and a printable photo template. Use the portrait for an upload and the template for printing, not the other way around. Check the downloaded portrait's format, pixel dimensions and file size against the application field. For individual domestic applications using the form-and-appointment system, remember the matching paper-photo requirement when your short form is printed in black and white.
For a baby or young child, take several shots at home when they are comfortable, then choose a clear, front-facing frame. You do not need to get the perfect picture on the first attempt. Prepare the selected image with Visafoto, download the printable template and have the required prints ready before the application visit.
The service costs $9 and includes 24/7 customer support. Visafoto reports an overall photo acceptance rate of 99.7% across its supported documents. If officials reject a photo purchased from Visafoto, you can request a 100% refund. Send the rejection explanation to support so the team can help identify the problem.
Use the correct Taiwan passport, visa or ID selection rather than treating one prepared file as suitable for every application.
Online form-filling versus conditional online renewal
BOCA's form-and-appointment system helps prepare an application for submission; uploading a photo there is not the same as completing a passport renewal online. The separate conditional online-renewal service requires a digital portrait and is available only to eligible adults with household registration in Taiwan. The existing passport must be expired or have less than one year remaining and must not be lost; personal details on the new passport must remain unchanged. Additional restrictions apply, and applicants need the required Citizen Digital Certificate or mobile credential. Collection is in person in Taiwan.
BOCA's conditional online-renewal FAQ, particularly the eligibility questions and photo questions 8, 9 and 13, explains these distinctions and the digital-photo requirements.
What if the photo will not upload?
Check that you are uploading the individual portrait, that it is upright and saved as JPG/JPEG, and that the file meets the pixel, RGB and 5 MB limits. In the form-and-appointment crop screen, keep the portrait proportional and use the head-size guides to position the chin-to-crown measurement between 32 and 36 mm. Do not stretch the face to fill the frame.
For the conditional online-renewal system specifically, BOCA documents a "force upload" option, labelled 強迫上傳, when a suitable photo fails the preliminary automated check. This does not waive the photo rules or guarantee acceptance: the authority still reviews the image and may ask for a replacement. Do not assume the same option exists in every Taiwan application portal.
