How much does a Vietnam passport cost? Standard fees at a glance
For an ordinary Vietnamese passport issued in Vietnam, the standard government fee in 2026 is VND 200,000.
The same fee applies to a Vietnam passport renewal or routine reissuance, such as when the passport has expired or has no blank pages left.
These rates come from Ministry of Finance Circular No. 28/2026/TT-BTC, effective April 1, 2026.
Replacement fee for a lost or damaged passport
The passport fee for a lost or damaged passport in Vietnam is VND 400,000. The fee applies to both electronic-chip and non-chip passports and has been in effect since April 1, 2026.
Vietnam passport fees abroad
Vietnamese embassies and consulates generally charge around USD 70 for a new ordinary passport. The replacement fee for a Vietnamese passport that has been lost or damaged is about USD 150. The exact amount can vary because missions usually collect the fee in local currency using their official exchange rate.
Check the Vietnamese embassy or consulate website for the country where you are applying to confirm the current fee. If the fee schedule is not available online, contact the consular section directly.
Urgent passport fees
If you need expedited passport processing in Vietnam, the urgent-service fee is VND 500,000 in addition to the standard passport fee.
This brings the total to:
- Urgent new passport: VND 700,000.
- Urgent replacement for a lost or damaged passport: VND 900,000.
Urgent applications are generally processed within 5 working days. A faster service, such as 24-hour processing, may also be available for an additional charge.
These amounts cover government fees only. If you use an agent or third-party service, expect to pay a separate service fee.
Who can get a Vietnam passport fee exemption?
Vietnam offers passport fee exemptions in two main situations: a temporary waiver for eligible digital citizens and exemptions established by law for specific cases.
Temporary fee waiver for digital citizens (August 2026–February 2027)
A temporary program waives certain passport fees to encourage the use of online public services.
- Eligibility: Vietnamese citizens with a Level-2 electronic identity account on VNeID who have integrated the required documents and apply online.
- Validity: August 15, 2026, through February 28, 2027.
- Benefit: No fee for eligible new passport applications or reissuance of travel documents through the specified domestic online procedure.
Important: Having a Level-2 VNeID account alone does not automatically qualify you for a fee waiver. The temporary exemption applies to the specified domestic online procedure and does not generally cover passport applications submitted through Vietnamese embassies or consulates abroad.
Permanent exemptions under Vietnamese regulations
Vietnamese law also exempts passport fees in certain circumstances, including:
- Vietnamese citizens abroad without a passport: People facing deportation from their country of residence who do not have a passport.
- Repatriation cases: Citizens returning to Vietnam under international treaties on citizen repatriation (e.g., for humanitarian reasons) who do not have a passport.
- Specific domestic cases: Applications required for national security, foreign relations, or under international treaties and agreements involving Vietnam.
The relevant authority determines whether an exemption applies based on the circumstances of each case.
How to pay Vietnam passport fees
Your payment method depends on how you submit your passport application. Online applications use electronic payment, while in-person applications generally allow payment at the immigration office.
For online applications
If you apply through the Ministry of Public Security’s e-services portal, pay the Vietnam passport fee online after the application receives approval.
Available payment options may include:
- Domestic e-wallets: MoMo, VNPTMoney, and ViettelMoney.
- Internet banking: Vietcombank iBanking, BIDV iBanking, and other supported bank accounts.
- International cards: Visa and Mastercard may be accepted in some cases.
After payment, wait for the confirmation page to display your document code. This confirms that the transaction went through. Save the electronic receipt and your application reference number for your records.
You can choose to:
- Collect your passport from the Immigration Department or a provincial immigration office.
- Have the passport delivered by post. Postal fees are charged separately.
For in-person applications
When you apply directly at a provincial immigration office, you can generally pay the passport fee in cash at the office.
For applications abroad
Vietnamese embassies and consulates set their own payment procedures. Depending on the location, you may need to pay in cash, often in USD, or by bank transfer. Check the mission’s official passport information or contact its consular section before applying.
Do you need to submit a photo for a Vietnam passport application?
Yes, in most cases, you need to provide a passport photo, but the format depends on where you apply. Online applications require a compliant digital portrait, while in-person or overseas applications generally require printed photos. At some domestic immigration offices, officials may take your portrait on site instead.
Depending on the application method, the photo must meet the required specifications:
- Size: 4 × 6 cm for printed applications or 3 x 4 cm when applying online.
- Digital format: JPEG, at least 300 DPI.
- Background: Plain white.
- Face the camera directly with your head uncovered. Ears and eyebrows should be clearly visible. Maintain a neutral expression.
- No glasses or hats.
- The photo must be taken within the past 6 months.

FAQ
Is a chip-enabled Vietnamese passport more expensive than a non-chip passport?
No. Both chip-enabled and non-chip ordinary passports cost VND 200,000 to issue.
Do I pay VND 200,000 or VND 400,000 if my Vietnamese passport is expired?
An expired passport falls under new issuance, so the fee is VND 200,000. The VND 400,000 fee applies only to replacements for passports that are lost or damaged.
What is the Vietnam passport fee for correcting a name, date of birth, or other personal details?
There is no separate fee specifically listed for correcting personal information. If the correction requires a new passport because the existing one must be replaced, the VND 400,000 reissuance fee applies.
Is it cheaper to apply for a Vietnamese passport online?
No. Vietnamese passport fees for online applications are the same as for in-person applications in 2026: VND 200,000. The temporary 10% online discount ended on December 31, 2025.
Does the Vietnam passport fee include home delivery?
No. The government fee covers passport issuance only. Home delivery costs extra and is paid separately to the postal service. Delivery typically costs around VND 30,000–50,000.
