A Zambia eVisa lets eligible travelers apply online before their trip. Whether you need advance approval, can get a visa on arrival or can enter without a visa depends on the passport you hold. Checking that first can save you an unnecessary application and fee.

This guide explains the nationality rules, visa options, documents and photo requirements, then takes you through the application, payment and approval process. It also covers current Zambia visa fees and when a KAZA UNIVISA makes more sense for a trip that includes Zimbabwe.

Zambia eVisa explained

The Zambia eVisa is the Department of Immigration's online visa application route. You create an account, complete the form, upload your documents and pay electronically rather than submitting a paper application at a diplomatic mission.

If your application is approved, you receive an electronic approval letter to present when entering Zambia. Keep the distinction clear: a submitted application or payment receipt is not an approval letter. Immigration officers still check your passport and eligibility at the border and make the final admission decision.

Choose the purpose that matches your visit. A tourist visa is not permission to take a job, enroll in a long-term course or live in Zambia. Those activities may require a separate immigration permit.

Who needs a visa for Zambia?

Zambia divides foreign travelers into three groups: visa-exempt nationalities, nationalities eligible for a visa on arrival and nationalities requiring approval before travel. The rules relate to your passport nationality, not simply the country where you live or where your flight departs.

The tables below reflect Immigration's published nationality categories, with the later Ghana visa waiver noted separately. The Department of Immigration's nationality lists also provide navigation to the visa-on-arrival and advance-approval categories.

Nationalities that do not need a visa

Travelers in this group do not need an ordinary entry visa for an eligible short visit. Visa-free entry does not remove passport checks, limits on the permitted stay or requirements for work and residence permits.

Some official entries use historical country or territory names. North Macedonia and Eswatini appear as Macedonia and Swaziland in the original list; other historical labels are retained above rather than treated as proof of eligibility for every successor territory or passport type. The repeated Gibraltar entry has been removed.

Ghana: Zambia's Ministry of Tourism announced a Ghana-Zambia visa-free travel agreement in February 2026. Ghana therefore has a newer waiver announcement even though Immigration's older visa-on-arrival table still lists it in that category. Ghanaian travelers should confirm the permitted visit length for their trip rather than pay for a visa solely because of that older table.

Nationalities eligible for a Zambia visa on arrival

Travelers in this category can obtain a visa at a port of entry or apply beforehand through the online system. An eVisa lets you complete the application before departure; a visa on arrival leaves the visa application and payment until you reach Zambia.

Ghana is covered by the later waiver discussed above. The official table also contains a standalone word, "Islands", which does not identify a nationality and is not reproduced as one here.

For a visa on arrival, carry your accommodation or host's full physical address and contact details. Air travelers need a return ticket; travelers entering by land or water need sufficient funds for their stay and departure. Your passport must meet the entry requirements explained below.

Nationalities requiring approval before travel

Applicants in this category must obtain advance clearance from Zambia's Director-General of Immigration through the online system. Do not travel expecting to obtain a visa on arrival instead.

If you hold a Taiwanese passport, obtain confirmation before travel: Zambia's Embassy in Washington lists Taiwan in its advance-approval category, while Immigration's published online table does not name it. Its absence from a table is not evidence of visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival eligibility.

For dual nationals, assess eligibility using the passport you will use for the application and border crossing. Holders of refugee travel documents, emergency passports or other non-standard documents should confirm their route with Immigration before applying.

Which Zambia visa should you choose?

Choose your visa's entry allowance around your itinerary. Leaving Zambia and coming back is a new entry, even if the excursion lasts only a day.

Visa optionWhen it fits
Single entryOne arrival in Zambia, with no planned return after leaving.
Double entryTwo arrivals, for example a visit to Zambia followed by a trip abroad and a return to Zambia.
Multiple entryRepeated arrivals during the visa's validity. Immigration issues this option through the eVisa facility.
TransitOverland transit through Zambia, for a maximum of seven days, where a visa is required.
KAZA UNIVISAAn eligible tourist itinerary covering Zambia and Zimbabwe, with limited Botswana day trips.
Day tripperA qualifying visit of less than 24 hours through Victoria Falls or Kazungula border control. This is a border-issued option, not an online eVisa.

Visa-free travelers do not need to buy a Zambia entry visa simply because the online service exists. However, exemption for Zambia does not establish eligibility to enter Zimbabwe or another neighboring country.

For a direct air connection where you remain within the airport's transit area, Immigration's guidance says a transit visa is not required. The seven-day transit category is for overland travel, not an automatic requirement for every connecting flight.

Zambia eVisa requirements and documents

Prepare the documents for your actual purpose of visit before opening the application. A tourist staying at a hotel and a visitor staying with relatives do not have identical supporting-document requirements.

Passport requirements

The Department of Immigration's visitor guidance requires at least six months of passport validity from the date of entry and at least three full blank pages. Renew your passport first if it will not meet those conditions.

Upload a clear copy of the complete biographical page. Keep the passport number, personal details, photograph and machine-readable zone visible. The machine-readable zone is the set of letters, numbers and angle brackets at the bottom of the page.

Enter your details exactly as they appear in that passport and travel with the same document. A residence permit for another country does not replace your passport or automatically change Zambia's nationality-based visa category.

Documents for a tourist eVisa

Immigration's tourism checklist requires:

The KAZA application has the same published document checklist. If your trip is overland or you are staying with a private host rather than a hotel, explain the itinerary accurately and confirm the appropriate category and supporting evidence. Do not invent a flight or hotel booking to fill a field.

You will also need an accessible email account, your travel dates, entry details and a payment card. Immigration's published upload instructions accept JPG, PNG and TIFF documents. Follow any additional restrictions shown beside the individual upload fields; do not assume a PDF will be accepted just because it opens on your computer.

Documents for other purposes

The passport copy and portrait are required across these categories. The additional evidence depends on the visit:

PurposeAdditional documents in Immigration's checklist
Business visitA covering letter on company letterhead, with address and contact numbers, addressed to the Director-General; an invitation from the host company; and a certified copy of the host company's certificate of incorporation.
Ordinary visitor, such as a private visitA signed letter from the host with a full physical address and telephone number; return air ticket; and proof of the host's status, such as a Zambian National Registration Card or an eligible long-term immigration permit. A hotel booking is optional in this category.
School-related visitA school covering letter with address and contact numbers; an acceptance letter from the university, college or school; and the status of the host, parent or guardian, where applicable. A separate study permit may be needed for the course itself.
Overland transitA signed covering letter from the applicant addressed to the Director-General, explaining the transit journey.

For a private visit, Immigration states that people holding Study, Visiting, Temporary Employment or Temporary Permits cannot act as the inviting host under this checklist. An invitation alone is therefore not enough without suitable proof of the host's status.

How to write the Zambia visa covering letter

For a tourist application, write a short letter addressed to the Director-General of Immigration and sign it. A useful letter identifies you and explains the trip without repeating your whole application.

Include your full name, passport number, purpose of travel, intended arrival and departure dates, accommodation address and the entry allowance requested. If you will leave Zambia and return, describe that part of the itinerary. Use details that match your bookings and form.

For example:

To the Director-General of Immigration,

I, [full name], holder of passport [number], request a [single/double/multiple-entry] visa to visit Zambia for tourism from [arrival date] to [departure date]. I will stay at [hotel name and full address]. My itinerary includes [brief itinerary, including any departure and return to Zambia]. I attach my passport copy, photograph, accommodation booking and return ticket.

[Date and signature]

This is a writing example, not a mandatory government template. A business application or private visit needs the company or host letter described in its own checklist.

Zambia eVisa photo requirements

The official eVisa document checklist asks for a passport-sized photograph uploaded separately from your passport copy. Use a new portrait that shows your current appearance, not the tiny photograph cropped out of your passport scan.

For a clear passport-style result, face the camera directly, keep your head upright and use a neutral expression. Your face should be sharp and easy to see, with your eyes visible, a plain light background and no distracting objects. Avoid glare, strong facial shadows and beauty filters that alter your appearance. These are practical preparation guidelines; the published eVisa checklist does not provide a complete facial-measurement specification.

Immigration lists JPG, PNG and TIFF as accepted document formats. Its public checklist does not specify a universal photo file-size limit or pixel dimensions. Follow any technical limits displayed in the portrait upload field when you apply.

What size should a Zambia visa photo be?

Visafoto offers a Zambia visa format measuring 35 × 45 mm: the standard ICAO photo format. Paper applications at a diplomatic mission can have their own photo instructions. Follow the requirements for your application route rather than automatically applying a mission's printed-photo rules to the online upload.

Example of a Zambia visa photo prepared with Visafoto

Get your Zambia eVisa photo online with Visafoto!

You can prepare your Zambia visa photo at home with a phone or camera, without arranging a studio visit. Visafoto turns your source image into a passport-style portrait with the size, framing and background adjusted for the selected document format.

Start with a clear picture that includes your full head and some space around it. You do not need a finished passport-photo background: a wall, furniture or another everyday background can be replaced. Take a few shots if necessary and choose one where your face is in focus and your eyes are clearly visible.

To prepare the photo:

  1. Upload your chosen image to Visafoto.
  2. Select Zambia and the Zambia visa photo format.
  3. Let the service adjust the crop, head positioning, size and background. Visafoto also enhances lighting, contrast and resolution while preserving your facial features and identity.
  4. Check the preview and download the digital result.
  5. Upload the portrait to the photo field in your Zambia eVisa application, separately from the passport-page image.

Keep the downloaded original rather than taking a screenshot of the preview or sending it through an app that heavily compresses pictures. A printable layout is also available if you need a paper photo for a separate application route; choose the format required for that route before printing.

If the source image is unsuitable or you need help with the result, Visafoto provides 24/7 support. If an authority rejects a photo purchased through Visafoto, you can request a 100% refund. This guarantee covers the purchased photo, not the government visa fee or a refusal for unrelated reasons.

Prepare your photo through Visafoto's online photo maker before starting the document-upload stage, so you have the portrait ready when the application asks for it.

How to apply for a Zambia visa online

Use the official Zambia Immigration eServices portal for your application. Check the domain before entering passport details or paying: a visa-agent website may offer help, but its service charge is separate from the government fee.

  1. Create an account. Register as an individual applicant, complete the requested account verification and log in. Finish your profile with accurate identity, address and contact information so the correct services are available.
  2. Start the visa application. Open "My Workplace", select the relevant service under available visas and choose "Apply for Visa". Select the visit purpose and entry option that fit your itinerary.
  3. Complete the application form. Fill in the visa application, known as Form 16, with your personal, passport and travel details. Add accompanying children as required by the system.
  4. Upload the documents. Attach the passport page, separate portrait, signed covering letter and the other documents for your purpose. Open each file before uploading to check that it is complete and readable.
  5. Review the form. The system lets you preview the completed application. Check your name, passport number, dates, entry allowance and attachments before confirming it.
  6. Pay the bill. Review the electronic bill and use the portal's online payment process. If the bank window does not open, check whether your browser blocked the payment pop-up and allow it for the official site.
  7. Finish the submission. Download the payment receipt and complete the remaining confirmation steps, including "Finish" where displayed. Save the case number and verify that the application is submitted rather than still a draft.
  8. Monitor the application. Check the account and your email for the decision or any request for further information. Keep access to the email address used to register.
  9. Download the approval letter. Once approved, open the case's outgoing documents, save the letter and print it for travel. Check its details against your passport before departure.

A successful card transaction does not by itself prove that you completed every submission step, and it does not mean the visa has been approved.

How to check your Zambia eVisa application status

Log in to your eServices account and open "My Workplace". Applications are organized by status: an unfinished application remains in Drafts, a completed submission moves to Submitted, and a decision appears under Approved or Rejected.

Open the relevant case to read its documents and messages. For a decision letter, select the case, choose "View case" and look under "Outgoing Documents". Save your case number so you can identify the application if you need support.

Check your email's spam folder as well as the inbox, but do not rely on email alone. If Immigration requests more information, provide it through the channel specified in the request and check that any required resubmission is complete.

For a missing payment record, a technical problem or an unexplained delay, contact Immigration at support@zambiaimmigration.gov.zm. Visa questions can be sent to zambiavisa@zambiaimmigration.gov.zm. Include your case reference and a clear description of the problem, but never email card security codes or your account password.

How much does a Zambia eVisa cost?

The current Department of Immigration fee schedule lists the following visa fees and card-payment charges in US dollars:

Visa typeVisa feeCard administrative feePublished card total
Single entryUS$50US$0.50US$50.50
Double entryUS$80US$0.80US$80.80
Multiple entryUS$80US$0.80US$80.80
TransitUS$25US$0.28US$25.28
KAZA UNIVISAUS$50US$0.50US$50.50
Day tripper, border-issued onlyUS$10US$0.10US$10.10

The day-tripper row is included for comparison; it is not an online application option. The card totals are the amounts published in the fee schedule, not a promise that your bank will charge no currency-conversion or foreign-transaction fee.

Some older Immigration pages and embassy PDFs still display lower entry-visa fees. Use the current fee schedule and review the electronic bill before paying. Fees can change, and a private agent's charge is not part of the statutory visa fee. Do not assume a refund is available if your plans change or the visa is refused; review the payment terms shown for your application.

Zambia eVisa processing time

As a practical planning buffer, start several weeks before departure rather than leaving the application until the last few days. This is a recommendation, not a government processing deadline. Leave time to answer questions or replace an unreadable document; payment confirmation is not travel clearance for a nationality that requires advance approval.

The current public guidance reviewed for this article does not establish a guaranteed turnaround for every Zambia eVisa application. Older references to three or five working days should not be treated as a promise that your particular application will be approved within that period.

Prepare a complete application, monitor its status and respond promptly if Immigration contacts you. If your departure is approaching and no decision appears, contact the Department with your case number. Do not substitute a receipt for the required approval letter at airline check-in or the border.

Zambia visa validity and permitted stay

The visa's entry window and the length of your authorized stay are different. Ordinary single-, double- and multiple-entry visas have a published validity of 90 days from first issuance. Check the dates on your approval letter and use it within its stated entry window.

Tourists and ordinary visitors generally have a total allowance of up to 90 days in a 12-month period from their first entry. That does not mean the immigration officer must grant all 90 days at once. The stamp or endorsement in your passport determines how long you may stay on that admission.

For example, if your passport is endorsed for 30 days, you cannot simply remain for 90 days because the visa has a 90-day validity. Arrange an extension at Immigration before your authorized stay expires. Ordinary visitor extensions within the applicable 90-day allowance are described as free in the visitor guidance; a longer stay requires the appropriate further permission rather than repeated assumptions about a tourist visa.

Business visits have different conditions. Zambia's Embassy guidance distinguishes a 30-day business allowance in a 12-month period from the tourist and ordinary-visitor allowance. Follow the permission issued for your business visit rather than applying the tourist limit to it.

An overland transit visa allows a maximum of seven days. KAZA UNIVISA has its own 30-day rules, explained below.

Traveling to Zambia with an eVisa approval letter

Bring your printed approval letter and payment receipt with the passport used in the application. Save digital copies too, but do not leave yourself dependent on airport Wi-Fi or a phone battery to retrieve the documents.

Before departure, check that you have:

Immigration's general guidance allows ordinary eVisa approval-letter holders to enter through any port of entry. Do not apply that statement to KAZA UNIVISA: online KAZA arrivals are restricted to the designated Zambian entry points below.

At the border, check the permitted-stay endorsement before leaving the immigration desk. If a detail is unclear, ask then rather than discovering a shorter stay limit near the end of your trip.

Zambia eVisa vs KAZA UNIVISA

A standard Zambia visa covers entry into Zambia, not Zimbabwe. KAZA UNIVISA is a separate tourist option that allows eligible travelers to visit Zambia and Zimbabwe multiple times. Immigration describes its validity as up to 30 days in a 12-month period, as long as the holder remains within Zambia and Zimbabwe, apart from the permitted Botswana day trips.

It also covers Botswana day trips through the Kazungula borders. It is not general permission to stay overnight in Botswana, and it is not a visa for all five countries in the wider KAZA conservation area. Angola and Namibia are not included in this visa arrangement.

KAZA costs US$50 before the card administrative charge. It can be useful for a Victoria Falls itinerary involving repeated crossings, even if your nationality does not need a visa for Zambia itself. Check your entitlement to enter Zimbabwe before deciding that a Zambia exemption makes KAZA unnecessary.

Where can you enter with an online KAZA UNIVISA?

An online KAZA application is available only for arrival through these Zambian entry points:

Do not buy an online KAZA visa for first arrival at a Zimbabwean airport. Zambia's published online KAZA procedure requires arrival on the Zambian side at one of the four points above.

Nationalities eligible for KAZA UNIVISA

KAZA has a separate eligibility list. Inclusion in Zambia's visa-on-arrival or visa-exempt category does not automatically establish KAZA eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Do US, UK and EU citizens need a Zambia tourist visa?

US and UK nationals and nationals of EU member states are covered by Zambia's published visa exemption for eligible short visits. You still need a suitable passport and must satisfy the entry checks. Employment, residence or long-term study can require separate permission.

Can I apply for a Zambia eVisa from abroad?

Yes. The online route lets eligible visa-required travelers submit an application without visiting a Zambian diplomatic mission. Your nationality and passport type still determine whether advance approval is compulsory.

Can I get a visa on arrival instead of an eVisa?

Yes, if your passport falls in the visa-on-arrival category and you meet the entry conditions. Travelers in the advance-approval category must obtain the required approval before traveling; they cannot simply switch to visa on arrival at the airport.

Do children need a separate Zambia eVisa application?

Immigration states that children under 16 cannot submit a standalone eVisa application. When traveling with an adult, they must be included in the adult's application. Complete the accompanying-child fields and provide the documents requested for the child; do not assume that inclusion means no identity details are needed.

What if I entered the wrong passport number?

Correct it before submission if the application is still editable. After submission or approval, contact Immigration with your case reference and ask how to correct the record. Do not travel with an approval letter that identifies a different passport or alter the downloaded letter yourself.

I paid, but my application still looks unfinished. What should I do?

Check whether you completed the final submission step and whether the case remains in Drafts or has moved to Submitted. Keep the receipt and contact support if the payment or case status is inconsistent. Ask support to check the transaction before making another payment.

Is a payment receipt enough to travel?

No. Where advance approval is required, you need the approval letter, not just proof of payment. Bring both documents after approval.

Must I print my Zambia eVisa approval letter?

Immigration instructs approved applicants to bring the approval letter and receipt for presentation at entry. Print them before departure and keep digital backups.

What photo do I need for a Zambia eVisa?

You need a separate passport-style portrait. Immigration's public checklist accepts JPG, PNG and TIFF documents but does not state a universal portrait pixel size or file-size limit. Follow the live photo-field instructions and use a clear image showing your current appearance.

Can I enter Zimbabwe with a standard Zambia eVisa?

No. A standard Zambia visa does not authorize entry into Zimbabwe. KAZA UNIVISA covers both countries for eligible tourists under its separate conditions; otherwise you need to meet Zimbabwe's own entry requirements.

Can I extend my stay in Zambia?

Ordinary visitors can request an extension at Immigration within the applicable 90-day allowance. Apply before the stay authorized in your passport expires. A longer stay or a different purpose may need a separate permit, and the approval letter's entry validity does not itself extend your stay.

What should I do if my eVisa is refused?

Download the rejection letter, read the reason and contact Immigration about the next step for your case. Do not assume that the portal's appeal procedures for immigration permits automatically apply to a refused entry visa. Obtain instructions before submitting a duplicate application or paying again.
