Greek passport application in the USA is handled through a Greek consular authority. You need an appointment and must submit the application in person; the passport is issued in Greece and returned through the consulate. Before preparing your documents, check which office serves your address and which photo-submission method it currently uses.

This guide covers appointments, documents, fees, processing and collection, plus how to prepare and print the Greek passport photo in the USA.

Can you renew a Greek passport in the USA?

Yes, if you hold Greek citizenship and satisfy the passport-issuance requirements. Greek-American dual citizens can apply through the Greek consular system without traveling to Greece solely to submit the application.

Greek ancestry alone is not enough. If you have not acquired Greek citizenship and been registered in a Greek municipality, citizenship registration is a separate matter to resolve before applying for a Greek passport. A U.S. birth certificate showing Greek parents does not itself replace that registration.

Renewal means applying for a new passport booklet. It is not an extension of the expiry date printed in the old passport, and an online appointment or photo upload does not make the entire procedure an online renewal.

For an ordinary renewal, use the consular authority responsible for your U.S. address. If you are only visiting the country or need urgent help away from your home district, ask the office whether it can receive your particular application before arranging travel to the appointment.

Where to renew a Greek passport in the United States

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs' U.S. passport information lists nine consular passport contacts. Choose the responsible office rather than simply the closest city:

Consular office Published district Passport contact
Washington, D.C., Embassy consular office Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia passports.was@mfa.gr
New York, Consulate General Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania passports.nyc@mfa.gr
Boston, Consulate General Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont grgencon.bos@mfa.gr
Chicago, Consulate General Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin passports.chi@mfa.gr
San Francisco, Consulate General Alaska, California ZIP codes 93000 and above, Idaho, Montana, northern Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming grgencon.sf@mfa.gr
Los Angeles, Consulate General Arizona, California ZIP codes 90001 to 92999, Colorado, Hawaii, New Mexico, southern Nevada grgencon.la@mfa.gr
Tampa, Consulate General Alabama, Florida, Mississippi grgencon.tam@mfa.gr
Atlanta, Consulate Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee grcon.atl@mfa.gr
Houston, Consulate Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands grcon.hou@mfa.gr

California and Nevada are split between two offices. The published table uses ZIP codes for California and northern/southern districts for Nevada; confirm responsibility directly if your address is near a boundary or the instructions appear ambiguous.

Use the chosen office's appointment instructions. Booking systems and contact arrangements can differ between missions. Do not assume an honorary consulate or another Greek office can receive a passport application just because it provides other consular services.

When should you renew your Greek passport?

Current national guidance allows renewal within 36 months before your passport expires. The Hellenic Police passport FAQ states this window. However, the U.S. consular overview still describes renewal only during the final 12 months. If you want to renew earlier than that, confirm the office's current appointment procedure before booking.

An expired passport does not become valid again because you have submitted a renewal application. Plan around both the appointment wait and the time needed to receive the replacement booklet.

Damage, a change of personal details or a booklet with no usable pages may require replacement rather than ordinary expiry-based renewal. The reason matters for the application category, fee and validity of the replacement passport. Describe the problem when you contact the consulate instead of selecting a category solely by price.

Documents required for Greek passport renewal in the USA

Prepare the standard documents below, then add anything relevant to your circumstances. The application and declaration are completed at the consulate.

Standard renewal documents

Check that your name, date and place of birth match your Greek records. If your name differs between Greek and U.S. documents, raise the difference before the appointment rather than expecting the passport officer to adopt the U.S. spelling automatically.

If you do not have an accepted Greek identity card

The current national supporting-document instructions address permanent overseas residents without an accepted Greek ID. The alternative is a Greek municipal birth or family-status certificate with a recent color photograph attached for identity verification. The consulate can retrieve the relevant municipal record through the official system.

From 3 August 2026, identity cards that do not satisfy the applicable EU security rules are generally not accepted for passport issuance, with a specified exception for cards allowed to remain valid until 31 August 2031. This does not mean every older ID falls into the same category. Give the office your card details and establish which identity-verification route applies to you.

Additional documents for particular circumstances

Depending on the case, prepare military-status evidence, civil-record correction documents, a police report for a lost or stolen passport, or parental-consent and custody papers for a child. Medical documentation may be needed for a photo or biometric accommodation.

The U.S. consular instructions generally require supporting certificates issued within the previous six months. Ask which records this applies to and which originals or copies to bring; your previous passport is still part of the renewal application.

Greek passport photo requirements

For the printed route, the Greek passport photograph measures 40 mm wide by 60 mm high, with no border. The official Greek photo specifications should be used rather than a generic U.S. passport-photo format.

Photo or print format Dimensions What it is used for
Greek passport photograph 40 x 60 mm, or 4 x 6 cm The individual photograph for a printed Greek passport application
Standard U.S. passport photograph 2 x 2 inches, approximately 51 x 51 mm U.S. applications, not a substitute for the Greek format
A 4 x 6-inch printing sheet 101.6 x 152.4 mm A larger sheet that can contain prepared document photos; it is not the individual Greek photograph

How recent should the photo be?

National instructions specify a photograph taken within six months. The published U.S. consular guidance asks for one taken within the last month. For a U.S. appointment, preparing a new photograph within that shorter period avoids relying on the more generous national limit; confirm any different instruction in your appointment notice.

Appearance, background and quality

Face the camera with your head upright and shoulders straight. Keep a neutral expression, close your mouth and make sure your eyes are open and visible. Hair, glasses and accessories must not obscure the face.

The finished background should be plain and light, preferably grey, without objects or other people. The photograph must be sharp, evenly lit and show natural skin tones, with no distracting shadows, glare or red-eye. Wear ordinary civilian clothing and avoid alterations to facial features.

Clear glasses must not reflect light or hide your eyes; removing them can simplify the photograph where possible. Religious head coverings are allowed when the required face area remains visible. Medical exceptions should be discussed with the consulate and supported by the required certificate.

Printed photograph, consular upload or myPhoto?

Overseas applications can use a physical photograph, an upload through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' consular application platform where available, or on-site capture at an equipped consulate. Availability depends on the office and its technical arrangements. Confirm the route before ordering prints or relying on a digital file alone.

The myPhoto procedure used for applications submitted in Greece is separate. A photo file downloaded from an online service does not itself create a myPhoto code or submit your passport application. Follow the consular platform's file instructions rather than borrowing pixel dimensions or file-size limits from the domestic route.

Get your Greek passport photo online with Visafoto!

You do not need to find a U.S. photographer familiar with Greek document format to prepare your photograph. With Visafoto, take a photo at home, select the Greek passport format and download the result for the submission route your consulate uses.

Ask someone to take a clear photograph with your phone or camera. Look directly at the lens, keep your face visible and leave space around your head and shoulders. The starting background does not have to be perfect: Visafoto can replace it and improve lighting, contrast and image resolution.

To prepare the photo:

  1. Open the Greek passport photo maker;
  2. Select Greece Passport 40x60 mm (4x6 cm);
  3. Upload your source photograph;
  4. Review the prepared result and download the individual photo and printable template.

Visafoto adjusts the photograph's size, crop, background and positioning for the selected document format. Lighting corrections can address uneven brightness while preserving your facial features. You can prepare the photo at a convenient time instead of fitting a separate photography visit around the consular appointment.

For printed submission, use the template at its intended sheet size and follow the printing instructions below. For a consular upload, use the individual digital file and check the platform's current technical instructions. These are two different uses of the download, not permission to upload a printing sheet as your portrait.

The service costs $9 and includes 24/7 support. Visafoto's overall photo acceptance rate is 99.7%, across its supported document formats. If an authority rejects a photo purchased from Visafoto, you can request a 100% refund. Keep the rejection explanation so support can identify the problem with your result.

How to print out a passport photo in the USA

You can order a prepared photo template through a pharmacy's regular photo-printing service instead of booking its in-store passport-photo package. The template already contains the Greek-sized photographs; the pharmacy's job is to print the sheet without changing its scale.

Our Passport photo printing guide explain the regular-print ordering method. For a Greek passport, follow that process with your Greek photo template.

Order the correct sheet size

  1. Download the printable template from Visafoto, not just the single portrait;
  2. Open Walgreens Photo or CVS Photo and choose ordinary photo prints;
  3. Order a 4 x 6-inch print;
  4. Inspect the preview. The whole sheet should be visible, with no automatic enlargement, zoom or cropping that changes the photographs;
  5. Leave borders, collage layouts, filters and decorative effects off. If the service offers automatic image enhancement, disable it so the prepared result is not processed again;
  6. Choose a participating pickup location and check the total and collection time before paying;
  7. Collect the print, measure an individual photograph and cut along the template's boundaries.

The final photograph must be 40 x 60 mm, without a border. A sheet measuring 4 x 6 inches is much larger than a photograph measuring 4 x 6 centimetres. Do not ask the store to make each individual picture 4 x 6 inches, and do not choose a wallet-photo product that applies its own sizing.

If staff handle the order, explain that you need a regular print of an already prepared template, without resizing. Selecting a standard U.S. passport-photo package can produce a different crop and dimensions.

How to renew your Greek passport in the USA

Renewal involves preparing the application, attending the appointment and receiving the new booklet. Work through these steps before planning travel around a delivery estimate.

1. Check your Greek records

Confirm the personal details that should appear in your passport. If citizenship registration, a name change or other civil-record information needs correction, ask how to resolve it before the passport application.

2. Contact the responsible consulate and book

Use the contact for your district. Describe whether this is a routine renewal, an expired passport, a replacement or a child's application. Confirm the appointment arrangements, identity documents, photo format, payment and collection method in the same inquiry.

3. Prepare the photograph and documents

Use the Greek photo format and the office's confirmed submission route. Allow time to print and measure photographs if needed. Keep original identity documents separate from the copies requested for the application.

4. Attend in person

The officer checks your identity, records and supporting documents, completes the application procedure and collects the required signature and biometrics. Read the personal details carefully before confirming them, especially names and dates.

5. Pay and keep your receipt

Pay using the mission's confirmed instructions and retain the application-submission receipt. Keep a record of any reference number and the collection instructions.

6. Follow the collection procedure

The application goes to the Greek passport authority. When your passport is ready, follow the office's notification and collection instructions. Bring the previous passport for cancellation when required.

Greek passport renewal fees in the United States

The standard national fee depends on the passport category. The published U.S. consular instructions collect the corresponding amount in cash in U.S. dollars, using the applicable consular exchange rate.

Application category National fee Usual passport validity
Standard passport, age 14 and above €80 10 years
Standard passport, under age 14 €71 3 years
Replacement for damage, full pages or changed details €58 Different from expiry-based renewal; confirm the replacement category

Confirm the dollar amount and payment method before attending. There is no permanent dollar equivalent of the euro-denominated fee, and exceptional passport categories can have different charges. Do not use a domestic e-paravolo payment procedure unless the consulate specifically tells you to do so; overseas applications use the consular payment receipt.

The U.S. overview describes a refund following rejection of the passport application with the equivalent of €5 retained for correspondence. Confirm the treatment of your particular payment with the office. This consular-fee arrangement is separate from Visafoto's refund guarantee for a rejected photo.

How long does Greek passport renewal take in the USA?

The U.S. consular overview gives an estimate of about four to five weeks for the passport procedure. That is not a guaranteed delivery date and does not include the time you may spend waiting for an appointment.

Work backward from your departure date. A booked appointment, a submitted application and a passport ready for collection are different stages. Document corrections, replacement photographs, production in Greece and dispatch to the mission can affect the schedule.

If your trip is urgent, explain the reason and dates when contacting the office. Ask what options are available for your circumstances before relying on an accelerated delivery date.

Receiving your new passport and cancelling the old one

Keep the application receipt safe: the U.S. guidance requires it for collection. A passport can be collected by the applicant, the person exercising parental responsibility, or a properly authorized representative. A representative needs the required authenticated authorization and identification.

The previous passport is normally returned during processing and brought back for cancellation when the new passport is received. Do not throw it away because it has expired; it can still be relevant to renewal and identity verification.

Do not assume postal delivery is available everywhere. Confirm the office's arrangements before leaving an appointment, particularly if returning to the city would involve another long trip.

Renewing a Greek passport for a child

A child's passport renewal is a separate application, and the child must attend. Prepare the child's Greek records and passport, together with the parents' or guardian's identification and the appropriate consent documents.

Under the national rules, when both parents exercise custody, one can attend with the other parent's written consent and properly authenticated signature. The U.S. page contains differing attendance wording, so arrange the accepted consent procedure with the mission before deciding that a parent can be absent. Sole custody or guardianship requires the relevant evidence.

Children under 12 need an additional printed color photograph for the municipal-certificate identity procedure, including when the main passport portrait is digital. Confirm the number of prints with the office. Standard passports are valid for three years below age 14 and ten years from age 14, although exceptional circumstances can result in a shorter validity.

Take several photographs at home while your child is comfortable rather than rushing to get one usable frame. Choose a clear, suitable image and prepare it through the Greek document format. General home-photography techniques are explained in our guide to taking a baby's passport photo without the stress.

What if your passport is lost or your photo is rejected?

Lost or stolen Greek passport

Report the loss or theft to local U.S. police and the nearest Greek consular authority. Keep the police documentation and follow the consulate's declaration and replacement instructions. A lost-passport investigation can make the process different from a routine renewal, so do not use the ordinary processing estimate as a replacement promise.

If you need to travel immediately, ask whether an emergency travel document is appropriate for your journey. Such a document is not the same as a full renewed passport and may have different route or destination restrictions.

Rejected passport photograph

A photo that does not meet the Greek requirements can lead to a replacement-photo request or rejection of the application. Ask for the specific reason: an incorrect crop needs a different correction from a printing problem or a photograph that is too old.

If the rejected photograph was purchased from Visafoto, contact support with the authority's explanation. You can request a 100% refund. Keep the source photograph and downloaded files available so support can help you understand the result.

Frequently asked questions

Can I renew an expired Greek passport in the USA?

An expired passport does not prevent you from asking the consulate to process a new application. Bring it and establish the required identity-verification procedure. It cannot be used for travel merely because renewal is underway.

Can I renew without a current Greek identity card?

For permanent overseas residents without an accepted Greek ID, the national instructions provide a municipal birth or family-status certificate route with photographic identity verification. Arrange this with the consulate before your appointment.

Can a Greek-American dual citizen renew a Greek passport?

Yes, Greek citizenship is the relevant starting point. Being an American of Greek ancestry is different from already holding Greek citizenship and municipal registration.

Can I apply outside my consular district?

Do not assume another office will accept an ordinary renewal. Explain your address and circumstances before booking, especially if you are visiting the USA temporarily or need urgent assistance away from home.

Can I travel while the renewal is being processed?

The old passport is normally returned while you wait, but travel still depends on its validity, condition and your destination's requirements. An expired passport or renewal receipt is not a substitute for an accepted travel document. Coordinate collection and cancellation with your travel dates.

Can someone else collect my Greek passport?

The published U.S. guidance permits a properly authorized representative. Confirm the required authentication, identification and application receipt with the office before sending someone to collect it.

Can I use a U.S. 2 x 2-inch passport photo for Greece?

No, not as a substitute for the printed Greek format. The Greek passport photograph is 40 x 60 mm. Order a template prepared for Greece and measure each picture after printing.

Do I still need a printed photo if I upload one online?

That depends on the office's active submission route and any additional identity-verification requirements. In particular, the under-12 municipal-certificate procedure needs an additional physical photograph. Confirm the instructions for your appointment rather than assuming every upload removes the need for prints.
