General Thailand visa types
The types of visas are divided by entry purposes:
- Tourist visa. Suitable for recreational purposes and personal visits. Allows to spend up to 60 days in Thailand and can be extended for an extra 30 days in the Immigration Office without leaving the country.
- Business or investor visa. It is issued for a period of 90 days and is renewable for up to 1 year without leaving the country.
- Study visa. Valid for one year and can be obtained by anyone studying in the Kingdom. To a student visa to Thailand, you must choose and pay for a study program at one of the accredited institutions.
- Transit visa. It is required if you are transiting to Thailand and your country is not on the list of states eligible for visa-on-arrival. It is necessary if you are traveling through Thailand to a third destination country and your country is not on the list of states eligible for visa-on-arrival. No transit visa is necessary if the connection takes less than 12 hours.
- Non-Immigrant O visa. Thailand family visa is issued to spouses, children, and parents of Thai nationals. Its initial validity period is three months.
- Long stay visa. The so-called Thailand retirement visa, which is issued to people over the age of 50. It is issued for one year, after which you can extend it (the number of extensions is not limited). If you are a citizen of Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA, you can get a retirement visa for 5 years. To qualify, you must prove a monthly income of at least 65,000 THB (about $1,800) or a bank account with a deposit of at least 800,000 THB (about $22 000).
- Smart visa. A new type of visa specifically designed to attract highly skilled workers, investors, managers, and start-ups. It is issued for a period of up to 4 years. It is one of the most demanding types of Thai visas to obtain: you need to work in one of the ten government-approved areas and earn at least 200,000 baht per month. To get a smart visa through investment, you must invest at least 20 million baht in high-tech companies in Thailand. Start-ups must have a deposit of at least 600,000 baht and be able to implement their project within a year.
- Government official visa. It is issued to government and diplomatic organizations employees and to attend events organized by the Thai government. Family members of diplomats and officials working in Thailand are also eligible.
- Diplomatic visa. Designed for UN Laissez-Passer and official passport holders.

Thailand e-visa photo requirements
Make sure your photo fulfills these parameters:
- The digital Thailand visa photo size is 35x45 mm;
- If submitting online, the file size must not exceed 150 Kb;
- The image must have adequate brightness and contrast and show natural skin tone;
- It should show a close-up of the head and (partial) shoulders;
- Your head must be looking straight forward, centered with a neutral expression and in sharp focus, and clear with no ink marks/creases/lines;
- The face (from forehead edge to bottom of chin) should be 70 to 80% of the photo;
- The eyes must be open and no hair obscuring the face;
- Prescription glasses are allowed but have to be clear and thin framed and should not have flash reflection or obscure the eyes;
- Head coverings, hair, head-dress or facial ornaments should not obscure the face;
- The photo must have a plain white background with no other people or objects;
- The lighting must be uniform with no shadows on the face or behind;
- Photos should not have red eyes.
